Acupuncture & Dry Needling

The Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling (MDN) course is a 5 day post-registration program for therapists.  The MDN is based on the accredited acupuncture course for Physiotherapists taught by Dr Norris for over 20 years, and his Dry Needling courses taught for various universities and teaching groups throughout Europe.  The MDN course is delivered to the same high standard (‘M’ level) as the foundation course for hospital physiotherapists, but is now open to other therapy professionals.

The MDN course covers Medical Acupuncture in detail, and presents an evidence based approach to this treatment modality for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.  The course is offered either as a single 5 day program, or as a two part course of 2 days (Introduction to Dry Needling) and 3 days (Medical acupuncture and advanced Dry Needling techniques).  Each part of the course equips students to demonstrate clinical competence in the areas covered.

Post-basic level (intermediate) courses are offered, including acupuncture update, acupuncture for headaches and acupuncture for IBS.

Foundation Course

Dr Christopher Norris was one of the founding AACP tutors who established the 6 day acupuncture foundation course, and his course has been accredited from the outset.  He is the author of two textbooks on acupuncture practice for musculoskeletal (MSK) practitioners.

The AACP owned acupuncture foundation course is open only to UK Chartered Physiotherapists or Physiotherapists practicing overseas with equivalent qualifications. Course graduates once passed are issued with a certificate for a one year complimentary  AACP membership and are able to join this professional network group should they wish to do so.

Foundation courses for other practitioner groups such as graduate sports therapists / rehabilitators, osteopaths and chiropractors are still taught, but as non-accredited Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Foundation courses taught outside the UK as intensive 6 day blocks are again as CPD only and will not lead to AACP membership.

Post basic acupuncture courses are open to all registered practitioners with acupuncture training and are again taught as non-accredited CPD.

A six day (2, 3 day weekends or 6 single days) course. A four week gap is left between parts one and two.

Meridian pathways / what is an acupuncture point / basic point identification / safe needling / dangers and contraindications / introduction to TCM / pain mechanisms / point needling / point combination / treatment protocols / short answer test paper / Chinese body measurement / extensive practice

Please note that all students applying for the Acupuncture Foundation Course must be registered chartered physiotherapists (MCSP) and will need to supply their CSP registration number.

Unless otherwise stated, this course is AACP accredited.

Update & Post Basic courses

The Acupuncture Update course is a single day 10 hour revision course (with pre-course tasks) for those who have completed a foundation acupuncture course (AACP 4 or 6 day, MDN 5 day or equivalent).

The course revises and updates needling methods and needle stimulation.  Common and less common point locations are covered (with points chosen dependent on group interests).  Building an acupuncture prescription is revised with emphasis on clinical reasoning, treatment progression, and incorporation into overall physiotherapy management.

Lectures, demonstration, and practical work are used throughout the day.

Specialist single day courses include Acupuncture for Headaches and Acupuncture for IBS.
